SEO for Gemini: How to Get Cited by Google's AI Assistant

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It is integrated into Google Search through AI Overviews, into Google Workspace through Gemini for Google Workspace, and into Android devices through Gemini for Android. This integration gives Gemini a massive distribution advantage, it reaches users through the products they already use every day.

How Gemini Works

Gemini generates answers from two sources: its training data and real-time Google Search results. When a user asks Gemini a question, it can either answer from what it learned during training or perform a Google Search to find fresh information.

This is different from ChatGPT (which uses Bing) and Perplexity (which uses its own search index). Gemini uses Google Search, which means your Google rankings directly affect your Gemini visibility. If you rank well on Google, you are more likely to be cited by Gemini.

5 Tactics for Gemini SEO

1. Rank Well on Google

Because Gemini uses Google Search for real-time information, your Google rankings are the foundation of your Gemini visibility. If you do not rank on Google, Gemini will not find your content during real-time searches.

This makes traditional SEO the prerequisite for Gemini SEO. Focus on:

  • Quality content that answers user questions
  • Authoritative backlinks
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages
  • Proper technical SEO (sitemaps, structured data, clean HTML)
  • Google Business Profile optimization for local queries

2. Optimize for Google AI Overviews

Gemini powers Google AI Overviews, the AI-generated answers that appear at the top of Google search results. If you are cited in an AI Overview, you are effectively being cited by Gemini. The tactics for AI Overviews SEO are the same as for Gemini SEO:

  • Rank in the top 10 for your target keywords
  • Write extractable answers (direct, concise, first paragraph)
  • Use structured data (FAQ schema, HowTo schema, Article schema)
  • Publish original data and statistics
  • Target informational queries

3. Allow Google-Extended in Robots.txt

Google uses a crawler called Google-Extended to fetch web pages for AI training and Gemini. If your robots.txt blocks Google-Extended, Google cannot use your content to train Gemini or for Gemini's real-time retrieval.

Check for:

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

If you see this, remove it unless you have a specific reason to opt out of Google's AI training.

4. Use Structured Data

Google loves structured data, and Gemini inherits this preference. Implement JSON-LD schema for your organization, products, services, articles, and FAQs. This helps Gemini understand what your content is about and when to cite it.

Prioritize:

  • Organization schema (brand name, description, logo, founders)
  • Article schema (headline, author, date published, date modified)
  • FAQPage schema (questions and answers)
  • Product schema (product names, descriptions, prices)
  • HowTo schema (step-by-step instructions)

5. Build Topical Authority

Gemini, like all language models, evaluates entities. If your site has comprehensive coverage of a topic, Gemini is more likely to cite you as an authority. Build content clusters with a pillar article and supporting subtopic articles, all linked together.

How Gemini Differs from ChatGPT and Claude

  • Gemini uses Google Search for real-time information. Your Google rankings directly affect your Gemini visibility. Traditional SEO is the foundation.
  • ChatGPT uses Bing for web search. Your Bing rankings matter, not just Google.
  • Claude relies more on training data. Brand mentions in authoritative sources matter most.

This means if you are already doing Google SEO well, you are most of the way to Gemini SEO. The incremental effort is in making your content more extractable and ensuring you allow Google-Extended.

How to Test Your Gemini Visibility

Open Gemini (available at gemini.google.com) and ask it questions about your industry. Use conversational prompts:

  • "What is the best [your service] in [your location]?"
  • "Who are the top [your industry] companies?"
  • "What do you know about [your brand]?"

Record whether your brand is mentioned, the context, and which competitors appear. Also search for your target keywords on Google and check whether you appear in AI Overviews.

The Bottom Line

Gemini has a unique advantage: it is integrated into Google Search, Google Workspace, and Android. This gives it massive reach. The good news is that Gemini SEO is largely the same as Google SEO with some additions: make your content extractable, use structured data, and allow Google-Extended. If you are already ranking well on Google, you are well-positioned for Gemini. The incremental effort is small, but the visibility gain is significant.
