Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant with growing search capabilities. Here is how to optimize your content so Claude cites your brand in its answers.
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. It is used by millions of people for research, writing, coding, and increasingly, for answering questions that used to go to Google. While Claude does not yet have the same search infrastructure as ChatGPT or Perplexity, it is growing rapidly and has unique characteristics that affect how your brand appears in its answers.
Claude generates answers primarily from its training data. Anthropic trains Claude on a large corpus of web content, books, and other text. Unlike ChatGPT, Claude does not have a built-in web search feature for all users, though Anthropic has been adding search capabilities over time.
This means Claude's knowledge of your brand depends on what was in its training data. If your brand was mentioned frequently in authoritative sources before Claude's training cutoff, Claude is more likely to cite you. If your brand is newer or has a small web footprint, Claude may not know about you at all.
Because Claude relies heavily on training data, brand mentions matter more than any other tactic. Claude learns about your brand from everything it has read. If authoritative sources mention your brand, Claude is more likely to include you in its answers.
Focus on:
Every mention in an authoritative context contributes to Claude's understanding of your brand.
Anthropic uses a crawler called ClaudeBot to fetch web pages for training and, increasingly, for real-time retrieval. If your robots.txt blocks ClaudeBot, Anthropic cannot access your content.
Check for:
User-agent: ClaudeBot Disallow: /
If you see this, remove it unless you have a specific reason to block Anthropic.
Claude is known for its precise, factual communication style. It tends to cite content that is similarly clear and factual. Content that is:
is more likely to be cited by Claude than content that is overly promotional or vague.
Like other language models, Claude evaluates entities, not just pages. If your site has deep, comprehensive coverage of a topic, Claude is more likely to consider you an authority and cite you when answering questions about that topic.
Publish content clusters: a pillar article covering the topic broadly, supported by 10-20 subtopic articles. Link them together. This signals expertise.
Claude frequently cites statistics and data points. If you publish original research, survey data, or proprietary benchmarks, Claude is more likely to reference you as a source. This is one of the most effective tactics for earning citations from any language model, including Claude.
This means Claude SEO is more about building long-term brand authority through PR, content, and mentions than about ranking for specific keywords. The brands that will do best in Claude are the ones that have built a strong reputation across the web over time.
Open Claude (available at claude.ai) and ask it questions about your industry:
Record whether your brand is mentioned, the context, and which competitors appear. Test monthly to track changes.
Claude is growing as a discovery channel. While it relies more on training data than real-time search, the tactics are similar to other AI platforms: build brand mentions, allow crawlers, write clear content, build topical authority, and publish original research. The brands that invest in PR and authoritative mentions now will have a durable advantage in Claude as it continues to grow.
