AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. SEO targets Google. Here's how they differ and how to do both.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. SEO targets Google. Here's how they differ and how to do both.

Someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best project management tool for a 10-person team." ChatGPT responds with a paragraph recommending three tools, explaining the trade-offs of each. No links. No search results page. No scrolling. Just an answer.
That is what AEO is designed to influence. AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing content so that AI answer engines include your brand, product, or content in their generated responses. It is a sibling discipline to SEO, but the target system, the success metrics, and the optimization tactics are different enough that conflating them will cost you visibility in both.
Answer Engine Optimization is the process of making your content easy for AI systems to find, parse, and cite when they generate answers to user questions. The term emerged in 2024 as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews began displacing traditional search for certain query types.
AEO is sometimes used interchangeably with GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AI SEO. The distinctions are minor. AEO emphasizes the answer engine as the target system. GEO emphasizes the generative nature of the engine. AI SEO is the broadest term, encompassing both. In practice, they refer to the same activity: getting cited by AI.
Search Engine Optimization is the practice of ranking pages in search engine results pages (SERPs). It has been the dominant digital marketing discipline for over two decades. The target systems are Google, Bing, and other crawl-index-rank search engines. The success metrics are impressions, clicks, average position, and organic traffic.
SEO is mature, measurable, and well-understood. The tools, the frameworks, and the best practices are established. AEO is not. That gap is where most of the confusion lives.
SEO produces a ranked list of links. The user scans the list, clicks the most relevant result, and visits a website. The website earns traffic.
AEO produces a generated answer. The user reads the answer in the chat interface. They may or may not click a citation link. The website may earn a citation but no traffic. Or it may earn nothing at all because the answer was generated from training data, not from a live web search.
This means the SEO funnel is: impression, click, landing page, conversion. The AEO funnel is: prompt, generated answer, brand mention, trust building, eventual search or direct visit. The conversion path is longer and less direct.
SEO optimizes pages. Each page targets a keyword cluster, has its own URL, earns its own backlinks, and ranks independently. You can have one page ranking #1 for "shopify seo" and another page ranking #5 for "etsy seo" on the same domain.
AEO optimizes entities. When ChatGPT generates an answer about SEO agencies, it does not pull from a single page. It synthesizes information from its training data, which includes everything it has ever read about your brand. Your entire content corpus contributes to whether and how you are mentioned. One excellent page is not enough. You need a body of work that establishes your brand as an authority on the topic.
SEO content is structured for search engines: H1, H2, H3 hierarchy, keyword in the title, keyword in the first paragraph, internal links, meta description, alt text. The format is optimized for crawlability and relevance scoring.
AEO content is structured for extraction. Language models pull sentences and paragraphs from content to include in their answers. The most extractable content is:
SEO authority is built primarily through backlinks. The more authoritative domains that link to your page, the higher it ranks. Domain authority, page authority, and link relevance are the core signals.
AEO authority is built through a combination of backlinks, brand mentions, and content volume. Language models learn about your brand from everything they have read. If your brand is mentioned frequently in authoritative contexts, across multiple sources, the model is more likely to include you in its answer. This is why brands with strong PR, Wikipedia pages, and industry recognition have a head start in AEO, even if their SEO is mediocre.
SEO measurement is solved. Google Search Console tells you exactly how many impressions and clicks each page gets for each keyword. You can attribute revenue to organic search with precision.
AEO measurement is unsolved. There is no native dashboard from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google that tells you how often your brand is cited in AI answers. Third-party tools like Profound ($499+/month), Otterly.ai ($29+/month), and AthenaHQ ($295+/month) attempt to fill this gap, but a 2026 study found a 40% data discrepancy between tools tracking the same queries. The measurement infrastructure for AEO is where SEO measurement was in 2005, early and unreliable.
The good news is that AEO and SEO are not in conflict. Most of what you do for SEO also helps AEO, and vice versa. The overlap is roughly 70%:
The 30% that is AEO-specific involves:
If you have limited resources, prioritize SEO first. It is measurable, proven, and still drives the majority of organic traffic for most businesses. Google processes over 8 billion searches per day. That is not going away.
Add AEO on top of SEO once your SEO foundation is solid. The marginal effort is low because most AEO tactics are improvements to existing content, not entirely new content. Rewriting your key pages to front-load answers, adding structured data, and monitoring your AI visibility are incremental steps, not a separate strategy.
The businesses that will struggle are the ones that ignore AEO entirely. Google AI Overviews now appear for roughly 47% of search queries. When they appear, they reduce organic clicks by 18-25%. If your content is not being cited in the AI Overview, you are losing visibility to competitors who are, even if you rank #1 organically.
Here is a practical starting point:
AEO is not replacing SEO. It is an additional optimization layer for a new class of systems that are increasingly mediating how people find information. The businesses that treat AEO as a separate discipline from SEO will win both. The businesses that ignore AEO will find their organic traffic slowly eroded as AI answers absorb the queries that used to send clicks.
The shift is already happening. The question is whether you are optimizing for it.
